David Guterson talks about planned communities and "cities" that all these random big companies have started building in order to enitce more middle class residency near their businesses.
The difference between these communities and the places i grew up is like night and day. In my neighborhoods the houses varied tremendously because it was an older area and everyone who lived there had their house built to exact specifications. (while it was cheaper). In Guterson's visit to Green Valley he notes that all of the houses look very similar because the residents just choose from set design which are just variations of one master plan. He also says that in the communties if you want an original house it's going to be really expensive.
Although in my final neighborhood we had a neighgorhood watch program, we were not obligated to it and we didn't sacrifice any other freedoms for it. In these communities they have a set list of rules including what your yard can look like and they claim it is for the safety and integrity of the area, in reality it's just making life harder on the citizens who live there.
Although none of the places i've lived have had a golf course on the property they have had pools and playgrounds and sidewalks and open feilds set aside for sports like soccer and football. And i'd be willing to bet that my parents didn't have to pay quite as much as the people living in these communities.

Honlulu, Hawaii; Monoa Mountains => My Home
@Bob Marley posters and paraphanelia (enough to qualify as obsession)
@View of the mountains out my window
@I only wore shoes when i was in an establishment (school, mall, work)
@School let out early every wednesday
@Soccer, surfing, hinking, swimming, tons of sports
The thing i think of first everytime i remember the island is my room, specifically the view from my window. I actually didn't see the beach like most people assume because i lived on the inner edge of Honolulu in the Monoa mountains. It was those mountains that filled my window. I could see the sun rise over them in the morning and the birds and trees, it was really peaceful. My home will always be the mountains of Oahu, i'm city boy but i'm still and islander.
